ST. LOUIS – Making the decision to have weight loss surgery can feel overwhelming. The team at SSM Health Weight Management Services helps patients consider all options to feel confident in their choice.
Dr. Aaron Bornstein, a bariatric surgeon for SSM Weight Management Services at SSM Health St. Clare Hospital and SSM Health DePaul Hospital, says the team offers an individualized approach to weight loss for every patient.
The Weight Management Services team offers both non-surgical options such as nutrition and wellness programs and support groups. Surgical options include Gastric Bypass, Sleeve Gastrectomy, Gastric Banding, Intragastric Balloon, and LAP-BAND® options.
Robotic surgery is set to debut at SSM Health St. Clare Hospital next year.
“The robotic program that will start in 2025 will allow us to have a wider range of patients that we can do here at St. Clare,” Bornstein said. “More complex patients, revisional operations—it gives us more ability to really kind of take care of the full range of bariatric patients, both from primary operations and also patients who have had prior bariatric surgery who are seeking some type of revisional operation.”
The robotic surgery gives Dr. Bornstein more control and precision, which can lead to better outcomes.
“The robot itself is actually three separate pieces. There is the robot, which has four arms that comes in, docks on the patient, and then I control it from a separate station within the room,” he said. “It allows me to have 3D visualization, more fine-tuned movements, and more control with the operation.”
SSM Health Weight Management Services will also open a satellite office at the newest outpatient facility opening in O’Fallon, Missouri, this month.
“I’m just excited that we’re able to branch out into that part of the city and be closer to people. It’s going to be a beautiful office, and people don’t have to drive as far to come and see us,” Bornstein said.
