RESTON, VA — Ideaventions Academy robotics team, Daedalus, successfully defended their National Championship title at the Advanced Vertical Robotics (AVR) competition on December 7 in Dallas, once again demonstrating their exceptional skills.
In back-to-back victories, Daedalus swept the AVR qualifying competitions held in Arlington, Texas, on November 9th and 10th, securing 1st place Overall and earning accolades for Best Presentation. They then moved on to the National competition where their innovative engineering solutions and teamwork cemented their place as national leaders in this elite competition in both categories once more.
This year’s challenge required teams to design and build large drones equipped with thermal and visual sensing capabilities, simulating critical disaster relief efforts following a Category 5 hurricane in Florida. The competition also involved:
- Programming a second drone and a ground vehicle to autonomously navigate the course.
- Operating small, manually controlled robots to complete additional tasks.
- Presenting detailed engineering notebooks and strategic designs to a panel of industry experts.
Daedalus rose to the occasion, showcasing advanced skills like robot operating systems design, 3D printing, and laser cutting. This is the third year our team has participated in the AVR competition, earning second place nationally in their debut year and claiming the national title for two consecutive years.
