Maryland Democratic Senator Chris Van Hollen said on Wednesday that the El Salvador government has denied his request to visit Kilmar Abrego Garcia, a Maryland resident who was wrongly deported by the Trump administration there last month.
Senetor Van Hollen went to El Salvador on Wednesday in a hope to meet Ábrego García at the country’s Terrorism Confinement Center (Cecot), where he is being held after the deportation along with other undocumented migrants.
The senator’s visit came just days after US President Donald Trump and his Salvadorian counterpart president, Nayib Bukele, refused to send Ábrego García back to the US. This comes even though the US Supreme Court recently ordered the government to “facilitate” his return.
At a press conference in El Salvador, Van Hollen said he met with Vice President Félix Ulloa, who told him he could not meet or speak with Ábrego García, even by phone.
“I asked the vice-president if I could meet with Abrego Garcia. And he said, well, you need to make earlier provisions to go visit Cecot,” Van Hollen said. “I said, I’m not interested at this moment in taking a tour of Cecot, I just want to meet with Mr Ábrego García. He said he was not able to make that happen.”
