External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar said that the change in US foreign policy was “expected” and that several actions of US President Donald Trump and his administration were “promising for India” and “suit in many ways.”
EAM also emphasised that the shift in the White House is pushing the world towards multipolarity.
Jaishankar was speaking at an event hosted by Chatham House in collaboration with the High Commission of India in the UK, where he discussed India’s evolving role in global affairs.

“I think we see a President and an administration which, in our parlance, is moving towards multipolarity. And that is something which suits India,” Jaishankar said.
“If you actually tracked it and assumed that most of the time, you know, political leaders, at least, do much of what they promised to do. They do not always succeed, or they do not always get everything they want, but as a general principle, you know when political forces or political leaders have an agenda, particularly if it is one which they have developed over a fairly long period of time and have been very articulate and passionate about it. Then, I think much of what we have seen and heard over the last few weeks was to be expected. So, I’m a little surprised that people are surprised,” Jaishankar said while speaking with Chatham House Director Bronwen Maddox.
Emphasising India’s interests, he said that he sees a lot of promise and believes they are witnessing a President and an administration that, in India’s view, are moving towards multipolarity, which suits India.
