
As the ongoing Israel-Hamas war continues to escalate, the World Health Organisation announced that the last major health facility in northern Gaza has been put out of service. The frequent Israeli strikes targeting sites near the Kamal Adwan Hospital left the medical staff with no choice but to shut down its operations.
“Initial reports indicate that some key departments were severely burnt and destroyed during the raid,” the WHO said in a statement on X. In a separate statement, the Israeli military said that the hospital became a “key stronghold for terrorist organisations and continues to be used as a hideout for terrorist operatives” since the Israel Defence Forces (IDF) commenced its ground operation in Gaza.

The WHO said that 60 health workers and 25 patients were in serious condition inside the building, including those on ventilators. Meanwhile, the international body noted that the patients in moderate to severe condition were forced to evacuate to the destroyed and non-functional Indonesian hospital, adding that it is “deeply concerned about their safety.
The hospital faced several Israeli attacks
Kamal Adwan Hospital and the surrounding area witnessed several Israeli attacks in recent weeks. According to the hospital’s director, Dr Hussam Abu Safiya, five medical staffers were killed in an Israeli strike on Thursday, The Guardian reported. He also mentioned that he himself was threatened to be arrested by the Israeli forces.
